I remember loving the Fort 4 as a kid, but I think I loved it even more as an adult!
How lucky are we to have a living history museum so close to the Upper Valley!
I got to see a muster a few years ago and I can’t wait to go back!
The Fort opens at 10 am. Browse all the different buildings, ask the living history volunteers lots of questions, take photos, and enjoy. You’ll see the houses of different individuals from history, a watch tower, These volunteers really know their history and it’s fascinating to learn from them. They really bring the artifacts alive that are on display. Often they demonstrate how the artifacts are used.
Price: $10 adult, $8 youth, $6 children, under 5 free
Hours: 10 am-4:30pm Wed. – Sat., Sun. 10 am-3:30 pm (early May – late Oct.)
During reenactment battle days there is often a food vendor. I’m not sure if you can leave and return on the same admission fee during the day (if so I recommend Village Pizza in town) so I would enjoy a picnic lunch outside the gift shop / main entrance.
This is often when battles commence, as you can see at this schedule of events for Sept. 29-30, 2018 where they will be reenacting a Revolutionary War battle. They also do other battles and living history demonstrations like Mountain Men (Sept. 2-3, 2018), and The Romans. These day or weekend long events allow visitors to see leatherworking, blacksmithing, drill demostrations, artillery demonstrations, practice being part of a drill, and more. To see what it’s like firsthand, you can read my post Afternoon Battle Reenactment at Fort #4.
Here are two videos demonstrating getting ready for battle. I love that there’s authentic music of the time period that the reenacters learn.
The fort also hosts dances, dinners, history talks and more. You can see their full calendar of events here.
